Sanchi has the earliest Buddhist Stupas in India. These date back to 262 BC. The victorious emperor Ashoka was so horrified by the results of his war that he embraced Buddhism. He built the first Stupa at this location along with the infamous Ashoka Pillar which was destroyed and the three-lion headed crown now lies in the museum in Sanchi.
