Celebration of Duessera in Delhi

September 28, 2008

The last day of of the Navratri festival called Duessara. This is the celebration of Rama's return from exile and the vanquishment of Ravanna - the 10 headed demon who had abducted Sita. On the last day, Indians in the north part of the country act out the story of Rama and Ravana - called Ram-Lila. We visited the Ram-Lila maidan at the Red Fort in Dehli. There must have been a hundred thousand people there watching actors act out the scenes culminating in the burning of Ravanna and his brothers. Huge effigies (approx. 30 feet high) are created with fireworks attached to the figures. The burning of the figures signifies victory over evil. Quite an exciting event -- unfortunately we were unable to take pictures but got a taste of the wonderful festivities and crowds.
