Just 8 km from Bhubaneswar is the town of Dhauli. The peace pagoda was built in 1972 by the Japanese and gifted to the country. Close by lay the Ashoka Edicts. The Edicts are tenets of Buddhism that King Ashoka adopted after the Kalinga war, a war that troubled him tremendously. The carved elephant located on the sites of the Ashoka edicts is a symbol of Buddha. It is said that before Buddha was born, his mother dreamed of a white elephant coming out of her womb.
